LEVENDI
Pedigree Analysis by Kristen Manning

One of the nine stakes winners – and three Gr.1 winners – by Pierro out of a Redoute’s Choice mare – Levendi boasts an outstanding racetrack resume with a great pedigree in support; what a lovely stallion prospect he is!

The closest male duplications in Levendi’s pedigree are crosses of the legendary stallions Northern Dancer and Mr Prospector – both of whom hail from families whose influence is well worth tapping into.

In fact Levendi is already line-bred to Northern Dancer’s family – that stallion’s influential dam Natalma being the third dam of Redoute’s Choice’s sire Danehill. Natalma’s dam Almahmoud is also worthy of duplication and there is plenty of this family around courtesy of Halo and Machiavellian (whose dam by Halo is bred on a 3 X 3 cross of Almahmoud, her third dam) with the latter well represented in Australia by his son Street Cry.

Mr Prospector meanwhile combines very well with his relations including Seattle Slew, Lomond (dam sire of Exceed And Excel), Elusive Quality (five of the six Pierro runners out of his daughters are winners including the stakes winner Roy Had Enough), Shecky Greene, Sing Sing and Darshaan. Meanwhile descendants of Mr Prospector’s prolific ancestress Frizette to have stood in this part of the world include Artie Schiller, Jugah, Bahri, Bahhare, Gold And Ivory, Seattle Dancer, Mukaddamah, Twenty Four Karat, Heart Of Darkness, Half Iced and Prince True.

Levendi’s sire Pierro also hails from an outstanding family – one which has also produced the stallions Archway, Dr Devious, Claude, Pasakos, Cambremont, Avaray, Shinko King, River Of Light, Rhinebeck, Bon Mot, Markofdistinction and Tennyson (second dam sire of Montjeu whose son Tavistock has been combining so well with Pierro’s great grandsire Zabeel).

Then there is Pierro’s sire Lonhro who, from limited opportunities, has been combining nicely with his relation Grosvenor – a chance to line-breed to the high class broodmare My Tricia, dam of Grosvenor and third dam of Lonhro. My Tricia’s grandam Sweet Time meanwhile is the third dam of Ilovethiscity.

Lonhro is of course a son of the mighty Octagonal who hails from the Eight Carat branch of one of the world’s most prolific families – that of the half-sisters Mumtaz Mahal and Lady Juror, daughters of the famed matriarch Lady Josephine.

Eight Carat is proving to be a reliable line-breeding subject and can be easily sourced via Commands, Danewin, Zed, Viking Ruler, Viscount, Don Eduardo, Special Bond, Kempinsky, Dangerous, Kaapstad, Court Of Jewels, De Beers, Deep Field, Shooting To Win, Colombia, The Commander, Eighth Wonder, Bramshaw, I Conquer, The Commander, Love A Dane and Dedline.

Levendi’s pedigree is strongly influenced by the Lady Josephine family with 11 strains of Fair Trial, ten of Mahmoud, 15 of Nasrullah and seven of Royal Charger. He also has Prince Taj, Aristophanes, Kashmir II, Jambo and Coeur Volant… making him a great option for mares who also boast Lady Josephine strength.

Descendants of Lady Josephine who can be found in local pedigrees include Nediym (sire of General Nediym – noting that of Pierro’s seven runners out of his daughters, six are winners including the stakes winner I Like It Easy and two city winners), Mossman (Pierro has had just three runners out of his daughters but all are winners including the Gr.3 winner Persan) Kalamoun (sire of Kenmare with whom Pierro has excelled – a 76.9% strike rate with five of the 20 winners being stakes winners – three at Gr.1 level), Nassipour, Lacryma Cristi, North Reef, Eire, Centre Stalls, Kbenjar, Ladoni, Telesto, Savoire Vivre, Famous Star, Kreisler, Adraan, Aussie Rules, Sheer Talent, Golden Snake, Bao Luck, Nayrizi, Sir Tatton, Knowledge, Rock Hero and Sidereus.

Also well worth seeking are strains of Tudor Minstrel, Nilo, Nizami, Malindi, Lucky Bag, Test Case, Pherozshah, Migoli, Badruddin, Abernant, Mirza, Furrokh Siyar, Combat, The Recorder, Kurdistan and Regal Advice whilst noting that stallions with strong Lady Josephine influence include Rubiton (of Pierro’s six runners out of mares carrying a Rubiton strain, five are winners including the Listed winner Octabello and two stakes placegetters), I Am Invincible, Zoustar, Bel Esprit, Rory’s Jester, All Too Hard, Better Than Ready, Dundeel, Love Conquers All, Ilovethiscity, Magnus, Not A Single Doubt, Rebel Dane, Rich Enuff, Winning Rupert, Rubick, Sizzling, Skilled, Star Witness, Street Boss and Toorak Toff.

Levendi’s superstar dam sire Redoute’s Choice is a member of another internationally prolific family with his fourth dam being Best In Show – one of the great modern day line-breeding subjects. It is easy to tap into the influence of this family via daughters of Manhattan Rain, Rubick, Masterclass, Domesday, Spinning World, Good Journey, Denon, Hurricane Sky, Umatilla, Xaar, Thewayyouare, Dr Johnson, Telesto (USA), Echoes Of Heaven, Niagara and Al Maher.

Also worth seeking are strains of Best In Show’s grandsons Try My Best (most easily found via his son Last Tycoon who combines exceptionally well with Redoute’s Choice) and El Gran Senor. Also worth noting is that Last Tycoon’s Irish Derby winning dam sire Sayajirao combines very well with his Epsom Derby winning full brother Dante, dam sire of Octagonal’s dam sire Pieces Of Eight.

The Last Tycoon sire line has been well represented in recent times locally by Champion Sire Written Tycoon and his daughters/granddaughters are nice prospects for Levendi. His dam sire is Kenmare by Kalamoun whilst his sire Iglesia’s second dam sire Paris Review is by Noholme II who picks up very nicely on strains of his full brother Todman, second dam sire of Levendi’s third dam sire Centaine.

This provides for the opportunity to line-breed to the wonderful mare Oceana and strains of her other sons Faringdon and Shifnal are also worth seeking. Note also that Oceana is a good influence in the pedigrees of Savabeel, Flying Artie and Spirit Of Boom.

Best In Show’s ancestress Torpenhow is also ancestress of Redoute’s Choice’s second dam sire Nijinsky II who combines very well with strains of his 3/4 brother The Minstrel – the Canadian Oaks heroine Flaming Page duplicated.

Levendi boasts duplications of a number of influential mares of whom further strains are desirable. Such as Felsetta – ancestress of Lonhro’s third dam sire Hermes and of Levendi’s second dam sire Thunder Gulch. And of Dash For Cash, Sharp Edge, Buoy, Mariner, Sea Anchor (sire of Red Anchor), So Sharp and Sea Road.

Red Sunset (to whom the champion Sunline was line-bred) is another lovely mare to whom Levendi is line-bred – appearing via her Epsom Derby winning grandson Crepello (fourth dam sire of Pierro’s dam sire Daylami) and her son Rasper II, grandsire of the dam of Thunder Gulch’s sire Gulch. Further strains are most easily found in Star Witness (her great grandson Ribotlight is his fifth dam sire) and Fastnet Rock (her grandson Better Honey is his fourth dam sire).

Fastnet Rock is a son of Redoute’s Choice’s sire Danehill who does tend to underperform as a line-breeding subject but mostly when duplicated via two direct male lines which is not the case with Levendi. An example that can be used is Zoustar – who like Levendi is out of a Redoute’s Choice mare… and he is doing a good job with Danehill crosses including Fastnet Rock (four stakes winners including the recent Gr.1 winner Zougotcha).

Levendi is also line-bred to the lovely mare Tara whose grandson Wilkes is the sire of Centaine’s dam sire Vain and whose son Norseman is Zabeel’s fourth dam sire. Further strains of this family are worth seeking – namely Worden II and Le Fabuleux.

The influential Orlass is also duplicated in Levendi’s pedigree, appearing via her descendants Doyoun (sire of Pierro’s dam sire Daylami) and Sound Reason (Levendi’s fourth dam sire). There is plenty of Orlass about – look for strains of her descendants Bellborough, Droll Role, Derring Do, Narrator, Chatsworth II, Corinto, My Heart, Warpath, Hethersett, Aspect, St Briavels and Homeric.

Aloe is another fine mare – represented in Levendi by her descendants Round Table, Aureole Alcide and easily found via the likes of Known Fact, Gone West, Tentam, Atan, Voodoo Rhythm, Deep Impact, Doutelle, Nashwan, Unfuwain, Tell (sire of Pompeii Court), Tale Of The Cat, Pulpit, Johannesburg, Envoy, Marju, Second Empire, Red Tony, Hemingway, Ihtiram, Balestrini and Kingstone.

It is always interesting to try line-breeding to the family of a stallion and Levendi has had a couple of relations at stud – the half-brothers Rios and fellow AJC Derby winner Roman Emperor whose third dam Sellou is Levendi’s fourth dam.

Flower Bowl, the high class dam of Danehill’s dam sire His Majesty is a great mare to duplicate as is her grandam Boudoir II and strains of this family are easily found… Graustark, Crowned Prince and Majestic Prince. Also from this family are Whiskey Road and Our Poetic Prince.

Milan Mill is another beauty – the dam of the champion Mill Reef to whom Pierro’s dam is line-bred 3 X 4 –  is also fourth dam of Fuji Kiseki who is most easily found as the dam sire of Kermadec who loves Mill Reef strains. Also the grandam of Western Symphony, Milan Mill is a descendant of the influential Black Ray – also ancestress of Blushing Groom, Khaled, Pipe Of Peace, Red Anchor, Jacopo and Foray.

The Kentucky Oaks heroine Lalun is another proven high class line-breeding subject and Levendi boasts two strains of both of her prolific sons Never Bend and Bold Reason – more of both is nice. Lalun’s ancestress Sunshot also appears in Lonhro via Brookfield and her other descendants include Grand Chaudiere (dam sire of Snippets), Solferino, King Of The Tudor and Windsor Lad, Wolver Hollow, Shinko Forest, New Approach, Alfred Nobel, Frontal Robbery, Supernatural, Our Babu, No Faith and Niccolo Polo.

Levendi’s sire Pierro is bred on a 6 X 5 cross of another superb line-breeding force in Special, dam of Zabeel’s dam sire Nureyev (noting that Zabeel’s dam Lady Giselle is bred on a 6 X 6 cross of Special’s fourth dam Simon’s Shoes – also fourth dam of Val de Loir) and grandam of of Pierro’s second dam sire Sadler’s Wells. This is a family you just cannot have too much of and the easiest way to tap into its influence is via Encosta de Lago.

A prolific stallion who has combined with Pierro in the pedigrees of two Gr.1 winners (Shadow Hero and Jacquinot) with an outstanding strike rate of 73.5%, Encosta de Lago is a son of Fairy King – full brother to Sadler’s Wells (Special’s excellent daughter Fairy Bridge duplicated) and 3/4 brother to Nureyev.

Other Fairy King strains are desirable and it is also worth looking for his relations Perugino (sire of Testa Rossa), Thatching, Thatch, Topsider, Tate Gallery, Jade Robbery, Ridan, Lt Stevens, Lorenzaccio, Geiger Counter, Yeats, Dusty Boots, Dreamscape, Smart Missile, Northern Meteor, Headwater and Fiorente.

Back to Encosta de Lago – his dam sire Star Way is always great over Levendi’s wonderful male line ancestor Sir Tristram, the two stallions both descendants of one of the all time great broodmares in Selene.

Descendants of Selene to have stood locally include Entrepreneur, Icelandic and Our Maizcay. And strains of Selene’s dam Serenissima are desirable; look for her Ascot Gold Cup winning son Bosworth and her Middle Park Stakes winning grandson Fair Copy. Meanwhile Selene’s influential grandam Gondolette (whose St Leger winning descendant Chamossaire is the dam sire of Caro who appears in Pierro’s dam sire Daylami) can be found via her descendants Big Game, Sansovino, Fair’s Fair and Linamix.

Other noteworthy mares in Levendi’s pedigree include Hardiemma (dam of Pierro’s third dam sire Shirley Heights – also third dam of Pentire), Somethingroyal (dam of Sir Tristram’s grandsire Sir Gaylord and also of the legendary Secretariat), Grey Flight (third dam of Lonhro’s second dam sire First Consul – dam of What A Pleasure, Misty Day and Gray Phantom and ancestress of Secret Savings), Lea Lark (fourth dam of Miswaki, dam sire of Pierro’s dam sire Daylami – also fourth dam of Southern Halo, sire of More Than Ready) and Derna (third dam of Zabeel – also grandam of Carnegie, dam sire of Maurice).
